Ancient Egypt was divided into 2 regions: Upper and Lower Egypt.

Lower Egypt was located in the North, which is stretched out by most of the Nile river.
Upper Egypt was located in the South, which stretches towards the ancient city of Syene.

Therefore, the southern part of Ancient Egypt was known as Upper Egypt.
