Given:

x-y=10         (Upstream)       ...(i)

x+y= 16   (Downstream)       ...(ii)

Adding (i) and (ii), we get

2x=26

13-y=10

⇒ y=13-10

⇒ y=3

Hence, the speed of the current is 3 miles per hour.
